About CrimeByCounty

Free, accurate crime data for every US county.

Our Mission

CrimeByCounty provides free, transparent crime and safety data for every county in the United States. We believe that anyone — whether considering a move, researching their community, or studying public safety — deserves access to clear, accurate data.

Data Sources

Our primary data source is the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, which collects crime statistics from thousands of law enforcement agencies across the country. We also incorporate data from County Health Rankings for supplemental safety metrics.

All crime rates are presented per 100,000 population to allow fair comparison across counties of different sizes. Safety scores (0–100) are composite metrics — higher scores indicate safer counties.

AI-Generated Content Disclosure

CrimeByCounty uses artificial intelligence (Claude by Anthropic) to generate narrative descriptions for state and county pages. These AI-generated narratives summarize and contextualize the underlying government data — they do not create or alter the crime statistics themselves.

All crime rates, safety scores, and statistical figures displayed on this site come directly from the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program and County Health Rankings. The AI is used solely to produce readable summaries of this data. We review AI-generated content for accuracy, but the raw data tables and scores shown on each county page are always the authoritative source.
